Initial discussions with Denver Airport regarding the Great Hall Project began in 2018, resulting in a contract by the end of 2022. The Great Hall Project focused on improving security by moving the TSA checkpoints from Level 5 to Level 6 in the terminal. The new checkpoints feature 17 Scarabee Lanes with Smiths CT Remote Screening, creating a more efficient security process for DEN passengers.
The project saw significant milestones, including the January 2022 start with the first US test production lane called the ‘Boyne Lane’ at APUS Northern Michigan, and the December 2022 CPSS qualification of Scarabee’s full-size lane. From January to November 2023, 17 lanes were produced in the US at Webb (Boyne and Louisville). In August 2023, FAT-E was conducted by TSA at the Louisville APUS facility for the first production of a Scarabee qualified CPSS full-size lane. Onsite installation began in September 2023 and by December 2023, I-SAT testing was completed on all 17 lanes. We successfully reached go live on February 6, 2024. These enhancements are crucial as DEN is anticipated to reach 100 million passengers in approximately 10 years.
The achievement of the Scarabee and APUS team amidst incredible uncertainty and pressure is a testament to our resilience and dedication. The Denver West checkpoint is just the beginning of our CPSS rollout and serves as an outstanding showcase of our combined technologies, delivering unparalleled performance and operational flexibility.
This checkpoint has achieved several notable firsts:
- Largest CAP project
- Largest CPSS single checkpoint deployment
- First CPSS deployment with Remote Screening and Cross Lane
- First CPSS full-size deployment with odd size/oversize processing
Despite numerous challenges and moments of doubt, our collective dedication and unwavering confidence allowed us to not only reach the finish line but to surpass all expectations. This project sets a new benchmark for CPSS installations and will certainly be remembered as one of the more “interesting” projects in our history.
